    Southwest Missouri State University Admissions

Southwest Missouri State requires sixteen units of college preparatory curriculum for all first-time freshman applicants, including four units of English, three units each of mathematics and social studies, two units of science (not including general science), and one unit of visual or performing arts, plus three units of other coursework selected from the areas listed above. Once an applicant has determined he/she has met the core curriculum requirement, they must determine their “Selection Index.” This Index uses high school grade point average and class rank to attribute a score to the applicant, which is then used to determine whether the applicant is a good fit for SMSU. Once an applicant’s class rank and grade point average are determined, he/she can use that to determine what ACT or SAT score would be required for admission. For example, students in the 55th to 62nd percentile of their class and with a 2.96 to 3.16 grade point average must score a 20 on the ACT or a 950 on the SAT to gain admission. A limited number of students are admitted under certain conditions or circumstances. Many of these are Missouri high school graduates who, apart from grade point average or class rank, show some other kind of promise for success at the university level.

Southwest Missouri State University has an undergraduate admissions deadline of July 20 for the fall semester; students are encouraged to apply earlier. The application fee is $30. Applications can be submitted on-line. Students who are enrolled in high school at the time of application will need to have their official final high school transcripts sent after graduation to the Admissions Office.

As part of their application, students should submit high school transcripts and ACT or SAT test scores. Students should have completed high school courses as follows: 4 units of English (1 of which can be speech or debate), 3 units of mathematics, 3 units of history and social studies, 2 units of science not including general science, 1 unit of visual and performing arts, and 3 additional courses. Students are admitted on a combination of class rank or GPA and test scores.

Transfer students and international students will have varying requirements depending upon their prior educational background.

Students applying to the graduate programs at Southwest Missouri State University should consult the individual department and/or school to which they are applying. Applications can be submitted on-line, and the application fee is $30. General requirements include the GRE or other appropriate test scores (such as the GMAT) and a bachelor’s degree with a grade point average of 2.75. The graduate application deadline is July 20 for the fall semester; applications received after that date will still be considered but will be assessed an additional $25 late fee. Departments may have earlier deadlines.
